POETS OF RHYTHM
„You can blow your mind at home, or you can go see the POETS OF RHYTHM…“
Through their consistent development of the Funk sound of the late 60´s and early 70´s, the Munich, Berlin and London based Musicians–Collective POETS OF RHYTHM, stands for their constantly growing, worldwide fanbase as the “Godfathers of Deepfunk” (Wax Poetics Issue 3)”
This development is documented with a continuing output of 7” singles and Albums, now approaching the 30est release. Their last Longplayer DISCERN/DEFINE (Quannum/Ninja Tune) marks a further milestone on the POETS musical path, where they skillful projected their know-how of Funk into the new Millenium.
Currently, the staff of the Poets – Soundlab is on a journey through the far out corners of the musical cosmos. The discern, that not only Funk, but also African, Asian and Oriental rhythms, as well as the big brother Jazz can be “soulful” widened the groups spectrum towards musical openness and playful improvisation.
The Poets-Collective, over the years functioning as a pool for many different musicians, has extended its staff with some extraordinary members. Last year, UK´s Masterdrummer Malcolm Catto joined the group (best known for his collaboration with DJ Shadow and his own releases for Mo´ Wax Records), bringing with him the Cuban percussionist Ramon “Jacky” Yglesias. Also added to the band is the otherworldly vocalist Bajka, who recently gained recognition with her releases on Jazzman Records.
Celebrating the re-release of their now classic debut “Practice What You Preach” (Daptone Records, available March 2006), the POETS OF RHYTHM present, fresh as ever, all their past and future hits live, following their credo: “You better ride, ride on that funky train!” – where ever this travel leads to….
